DRAMA STUDIOS is an independent game studio based in Rennes, France. We focus on creating immersive, gameplay driven experiences through close collaboration between design, art and technology.
DRAMA STUDIOS is currently developing UNRECORD, a narrative open world tactical FPS built with Unreal Engine 5. UNRECORD aims to deliver a highly immersive experience through realism, systemic gameplay and a strong narrative approach. The project sits at an AA ambition level, combining creative freedom with solid production pipelines and technical rigor. Our goal is to craft believable worlds, meaningful player interactions and gameplay systems that feel grounded, intense and coherent.
• Permanent contract Rennes (35)
This role is about judgment as much as execution. Beyond implementing, we look for an engineer with the technical depth and the vision to understand what the game needs from Unreal Engine 5 for the experience we are aiming for, and to work out which levers to pull to gain performance or visual fidelity. You read the project both at the surface, the player experience and UX, and in depth, the engine constraints and opportunities behind it. You analyze complex technical subjects, spot where the biggest gains are, and propose the strategies to get there. You measure before optimizing, and you enjoy making other developers faster. Regular on site presence is expected. Partial remote work is possible.
- Profile CPU, GPU and memory (Unreal Insights, platform profilers) and drive optimization across the project
- Modify and extend engine systems (rendering, streaming, animation, physics) to serve the specific needs of the game
- Own frame rate and memory budgets, and help teams stay within them
- Maintain engine version integrations and keep our custom changes clean and documented
- Improve build times, cook times and developer iteration speed
- Support gameplay programmers with low level expertise and debugging of hard issues
- Evaluate new UE5 features (Nanite, Lumen, large world tech) for production use
- Ability to work with high autonomy, analyzing complex technical subjects, identifying areas for improvement and proposing implementation strategies to boost performance or visual fidelity
- Strong C++ skills and professional experience in engine, rendering or performance focused programming
- Real familiarity with Unreal Engine source code, not only its public APIs
- Solid grasp of CPU and GPU architecture, memory management and multithreading
- A measurement driven approach to optimization
- Ability to communicate low level constraints clearly to non engine specialists
Fluent or professional working proficiency in English (written and spoken)
-
- A shipped UE title with significant engine work
- Console development experience and platform certification awareness
- Experience with rendering techniques relevant to photorealism (virtualized geometry, GI, temporal techniques)
- Work on a UE5 based AA production pushing realism
- Ownership of engine and performance topics
- Direct impact on the velocity of the whole team
Close collaboration with all disciplines
