Food-borne infections are one of the major concerns in the food industry with approximately 60% of them caused by microbial transfer from contaminated equipment surfaces to processed food. The main source of this contamination are bacterial biofilms: multicellular communities held together by a complex self-produced matrix. Since biofilms can be up to 1000 times more resistant than planktonic bacteria, strategies to prevent their formation are of particular interest.
In this work, we aim to combine two approaches to disrupt biofilm formation at the early adhesion stage on stainless steel surfaces: grafting of bioactive molecules and surface microstructuration. A benzothiazole family have been selected for its activity on bacteriad and has been chemically derivatized to allow its immobilisation on surfaces. Different microstructurations of this surface will then be evaluated, using either electrochemical graftinge or inkjet microprinting technology.
The obtained functionalized surfaces will finally be evaluated to determine which topography would better reduce bacterial adhesion.
Required skills : Candidates must hold a PhD in chemistry or materials science, with expertise in surface modification and characterisation. Skills in ink formulation and inkjet printing are required. Experience at the interface with biology would be considered an advantage. Candidates must provide a detailed CV.
