About My English Sister
My English Sister is a Lyon-based English language learning and childcare agency. We support the English development of French children through fun, personalised tuition and care. Each year, we recruit 30+ English-speaking "brothers and sisters" to work with families across France. These are flexible, part-time roles ideal for students, language assistants, or young professionals looking to gain childcare and teaching experience, improve their French, and join a warm bilingual community.
The Role at a Glance
- Location: Rue Montesquieu, 69007 Lyon
- Start date: 3 September 2026
- End date: 2 July 2027 (full school year)
- Hours: 6 hours per week
- Children: Four boys aged 9, twin 6-year-olds, and one starting his second year of school
- Contract type: CDI intermittent (term-time only)
Weekly Schedule
- Monday: 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm
- Tuesday: 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm
- Thursday: 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm
No sessions during French school holidays: 17 October to 2 November, 19 December to 4 January, 13 February to 1 March, and 10 April to 26 April.
What You'll Be Doing
This is a busy, joyful afternoon role with four lively, affectionate boys and a warm, open-minded family who have loved having an English Sister as part of their household.
The previous Sister has left detailed notes to help you settle in quickly. Here's what a typical afternoon looks like:
4:30 pm: school pickup. Collect the youngest first, then the twins, then walk to the eldest's school a few minutes away (he meets you at the gate). The walk home is a great chance to hear about their day, all in English.
5:00 pm: home or park. Depending on the weather and how the boys are doing, head straight home or stop off at the park or the courtyard of their building for a few minutes of outdoor play.
Tea time. The boys have a lovely routine: coats and shoes away, hands washed, then everyone at the table for a snack.
Focused time with each child, roughly:
- Mondays: with the twins, learning something new together (fruit and vegetables, songs, painting, board games)
- Tuesdays: one-to-one time with the eldest
- Thursdays: all together, playing, crafts, and creative projects (Mother's Day cards, art projects, stories)
After the learning time, the boys get free time to play, read, or unwind on their own.
Meet the Boys
- The eldest (9) speaks excellent English for his age but needs steady encouragement to keep using it. He's a strong reader, very independent, and can be headstrong. The previous Sister found that involving him in setting rules and staying consistent with consequences worked really well.
- The twins (6) love spending time together and thrive on painting, board games, songs, and crafts. One picks things up quickly; the other gets there with patience and repetition.
- The youngest adores his brothers, especially the eldest. He loves being read to and copies everything the older boys do.
What Worked for the Previous Sister
- Games, outdoor play, and lots of physical energy
- Clear rules, boundaries, and consequences (a points checklist worked really well)
- Giving each child their own focused activity (the twins together, everyone else one-on-one)
- Avoiding repeating instructions and staying firm on rules
The family doesn't use a set activity book. The previous Sister prepared flashcards and lesson ideas and the parents printed them out as needed. You'll have real freedom to plan sessions around what the boys are into.
Who You Are
- At least 6 months of childcare experience
- Fluent in English (non natives encouraged to apply)
- Energetic, playful, and resourceful
- Confident and calm around multiple children at once
- Comfortable holding gentle but firm boundaries with a headstrong 9-year-old
- Warm, patient, and creative, with plenty of ideas for games, songs, and crafts
