Long hours and no overtime. You get pigeon-holed. They layoff and scare employees.
People here are great. You work with very bright individuals, and everyone is nice and tries to help you out. There is still office politics, but it at least stays hidden/behind the scenes. While the people are nice, everyone is ridiculously busy, so no one has time to teach you anything.
They send you to a "lakehouse" which is a KPMG-owned resort in Florida for training. It is extremely nice, and the food is some of the best you'll ever have in your life. They don't let you leave the resort or do anything else while you are there, and they don't let you bring family.
They do layoffs to scare employees (while continuously hiring new ones), and in the next week they send out official emails mandating 55 hour minimums from mid-July to mid-October. They'd prefer to force people out instead of lay them off and give them layoff packages.
Don't expect a work-life balance. Work is life, you'll have to figure out how to make things balance. You'll do tons of unpaid overtime. You don't get time off if you are sick either unless you are actually dying.
They have a hybrid work environment with 3 days in office which is nice. They are very strict about having 3 days, so if you only come in two days, you'll need to do 4 the next week. If you don't they'll hold you back from promotions.
They like to pigeon-hole you into one area of tax very quickly. They'll tell you before you get hired that you'll get exposed to this and that - wrong. You'll do one thing. They also "butter-up" or in

Points négatifsWork-life balance, no overtime pay, deceiving hiring policies, bad software
In a typical day in my last position I fulfilled management tasks of opening and closing the facility, as well as overseeing a staff of seven individuals. Throughout the day I completed various administrative duties as well, including answering phones, drafting documents and emails, filing and greeting customers. I also provided strong customer service.
My last job was an excellent learning opportunity and I developed my skills and experience in numerous different ways. While I already had strong IT skills, I didn’t have any previous experience of Microsoft Access. When my employer introduced a new order management system which used Access they gave me the opportunity to undertake additional training so as to be able to work effectively with this. I was then able to put this training into practice on a day-to-day basis and I am now extremely adept at using the package.
Points négatifsam ready to extend my business hours if process or work required
Busy seasons can be difficult, a good deal of turnover at the management level caused a large break in communication and goodwill. Employees were often pigeon-holed and stuck working for one client or partner. Not enough exposure to different managers and partners. Partners not involved in the employee process enough to make the decisions regarding their employees that they do. Too much of the process is filtered through a manager without nearly enough hands on discussions with employees. Partners become invisible until deadlines or special events, but more day to day contact and understanding of their employees would go a long way.
There is a reason KPMG is one of the BIG 4. They expect the best of their employees. There are going to be long hours and tight deadlines especially during busy season. However, they do an excellent job in training their staff. They provide extensive training both before starting and once on the job. They have an impressive library of continuing education and they will cover the cost. If you are self-motivated they give you every opportunity to be successful.
Points positifsExtensive training, catered food, continuing education, ping pong, community service opportunities
There are plenty of opportunities to learn and advance in your career. Opportunities are boundless, but be prepared to work 50 hours every week. Things pop up often and management treats everything like a fire drill. Management bends to clients needs without thinking of the strain it puts on their employees.
If you are a person who is very career focused, this will be a good place for you to learn and grow. If not, work life balance is not great and you might often feel trapped to your desk all day.
Points positifsGrowth and learning opportunities
Points négatifsPressure, stress, don’t feel like you are paid enough at lower levels
A stressful environment working for the SALT Practice
My typical day would begin during the beginning of the month. Each month the clients would submit their data for sales and use tax. The process begins with the checklist, reports and funding. The work is very stressful because of deadlines and errors that may occur during the process. The most enjoyable part of the job is after the 20th when compliance is over. I enjoyed working with others as well as learning from them about sales and use tax.
Points positifsSummer Events and Christmas Parties
World class work experience with people from different culture
The positive vibes and supporting superiors create a peaceful ambiance. Timely support functions like admin and IT departments are fully organized to facilitate flawless professional environment. The timings need to extend sometimes depends on the client country timing which may feel uncomfortable but the job demands it. Mutual understanding and respect among the employees is impeccable.
Points positifsCafeteria with free refreshments and indoor games
The office I was in has really taken a bad turn over the last 2 years. About a quarter of the group I was in quit since the summer, and more are planning to. One of KPMG's core values is open and honest communication, but they don't give honest communication regarding feedback or promotions. After getting fed up with inconsistent feedback I looked into other firms. Ended up at another firm, making a lot more money, and feeling like I am appreciated. Every aspect of the other firm has been better - disappointed that I waited to make the jump.
KPMG Global Services is one of the best available platforms for young aspirants to kickstart their career. Company offers best in industry salary package, recreational facilities, good working culture etc. Even though company's clients are from foreign, we do not have to work on night shifts. Cons are work life balance is poor. During peak seasons (15 days every month for my process) we have to stretch till night 9 o clock which is disgusting. Also average performers cannot survive long in the company.
