Experience Gained
KPMG offered me a formidable foundation to my careers an a highly competent finance person. I started my experience with KPMG when i was a university student recruited for Industrial attachment. During this period, my work had a great impact which impressed the management and partners and a place was automatically reserved for me after graduation.
During my 4 year (incl attachment) stint with KPMG, i learnt A-Z of auditing through rising from a mere intern to a audit supervisor. I performed and supervised financial statements of all kinds of clients. KPMG have a robust training mechanism that will always shape employees into competent finance people.
Hardest part of my work at KPMG was always leading an audit for the new clients. This process included high levels of risk assessments and understanding the business. In some instances predecessor auditors would not share all the required prior period infomation.
Most enjoyable part was having the accounts signed with the shorted time. This always proved high level of efficiency and ability to manage time.

Focusing Learning and development
As I joined KPMG initially as an intern to attain my CA designation. The core focus was on learning and developing the expertise in the profession. At KPMG its the pre mindset of every intern that the partners practicing profession over here are well versed with the practical expertise and professional norms so we want to learn as max as we can from them. The Firm used to send us on various out door / in-house training session on various newly effective accounting standards and locally implemented laws and regulations. The basic skill base was set and established at this platform. KPMG maintained a high learning environment where one have access to senior most partner to discuss any particular accounting / audit issue and to obtain clarification. Every day we used to learn lot of new things and experience the practical implementation of what have learned at various clients was the most enjoyable part of working at KPMG.
Points positifslearing, subsidy on studies, training

tough environment
I started working at KPMG doing my articles in quest to qualify to be a Chartered Accountant. I was assigned in the Energy and Natural Resources audit division. This is a division manly responsible for auditing companies in the Energy and Natural Resources industry.
During my 3 years at KPMG I was involved in the audits of the following clients:
• Sasol Limited and Group
• Eskom Enterprises Division and Eskom Holdings
• SA Paper Chemicals
• BHP Billiton
Variety of small and large client was an added advantage as this gave me good business exposure as larger listed corporate generally have sound control environment and proper governance structures compared to smaller companies.

There is a lot of room to learn in the audit field. Each client is unique and different from other. As being auditor we review almost all of the operations of an enterprise. It's a great learning experience.
The jobs are very hard-working and mostly time bounded. This requires utmost dedication and commitment to complete the work within time.
